I tried the OS, and it is wonderful, however, without reliable Wi-Fi, there is little point in installing onto a netbook (which is the whole idea).
I couldn't find kernel-source, or prebuilt binaries, and I certainly couldn't compile madwifi on the netbook.
If there was a foolproof howto, that took into account the compilation's epic fail, with a workaround to the KERNELPATH issue - that would be great. Until then, I will revert to WinXP.

Hi All,
I just tried the install of 2.8 from the first option on the usb menu (unetbootin created from .iso) no wireless light or wireless networks found, just trying the install option for a laugh, will post here if it works.

Although madwifi compiles against the 2.6.31 kernel, it does not work with it. As soon as there is a new madwifi released that actually works with the new kernel series, we will either a) compile it for you or b) at least give directions on how to compile it. Until then, you will have to use the ath5k driver included in the 2.6.31. I might add that it is not as flakey as earlier ath5k. Also, since madwifi is no longer being developed, I do not know when a new version will be released.

thanks for all the replies. I cannot see a valid reason why I would *need* the 2.6.31 kernel.
There are a couple of very good howto's on the internet, that go into detail on all dependencies, and include module-assistant, and the m-a commands to use!
I was unaware of the 2.6.31 compatibility issue. I have no wireless at home (I have a 802.11G USB adaptor, and have been using this with WindowsXP OS for file transfers).
I am such a n00b, I cannot even share my internet connection with the USB Wireless adaptor. I still have much research to do!
Without a wireless router, how would I set up an "Access Point"? I guess I can't share internet with an Ad-Hoc network either. Any help with these issues would be greatly appreciated.
vw72, how flakey is "not as flakey"? Could I run a 12 hour torrent without it flaking out?
hmmmm, it looks like I have sold my netbook to my brother already - so my next one might have a 6-cell battery and a decent resolution (not 600 pixels high!). Any information you give here I will pass on, along with a copy of Kuki on USB stick for him. (PS. he is not technically proficient with Linux, but he is a good Perl/C programmer).

timfromtang: I'm using a ZG5 without any problems. You have installed kuki I assume. if you start "wicd" and go to preferences, make sure it's set to "wext", "wlan0" and "ethO" and external programs on automatic. Also make sure not to touch the wireless switch. Once you do wireless will fail to work until reboot (a bug i notice on my zg5)

With regards to running torrents, using the Deluge Torrent client included in Kuki Linux 2.8, you should be able to run all night long. One of the reasons we switched to Deluge was it had better reliability and recovery with the ath5k driver. However, if you are using a usb key to obtain wireless, then that driver probably won't be the one you want. The ath5k is only for the internal wireless (unless your usb key is also based on the same chipset).
Another thing to keep in mind, is that some models (like the a110), will automatically disconnect the wireless if an ethernet cable is plugged in.

I got it sorted, turned out to be a bad iso, I remade the usb boot disk using a freshly downloaded iso this evening and everything is working beautifully out of the box. Thanks for the help.

Good news, your problem is solved, i also believe there's not much more to say bout the madwifi driver. The recent kernel has no support (this because the madwifi driver isn't in active development anymore) I'm closing this topic
