Does 3G work with the new kernel ?

I was wondering if 3G modems are working with our newest kernel.
vw72 put a lot of effort into getting the right drivers in the kernel to get those to work.
I believe we all whould like to know how we stand.

Does 3G work with 2-6-30-1-kuki-20090707 or doesn't it.
If not, which things have you tried, and what is your terminal output?

Great timing, I was just about to post a question about this :-).

So, I am definitely seeing improvements with the new kernel 2-6-30-1. firstly, my ZTE MF626 is recognized when plugged in, it shows as CD-drive with the files for windows install.
I then apply usb_modeswitch without parameters (removed >;< for the MF626 in the .conf) and lsusb shows me that the address has changed. Desktop Icon for cd-drive is gone, modem does re-connect.
On seeing green light again, I run 3G-dialer from desktop (did change the .conf according to info from my 3G provider - how do I tell the script there is no login nor password needed? just username = or username = ""?)
3G Dialer recognizes the modem and tries to connect. I then get

"cannot get information for serial port"
"initializing modem"
"sending ATZ"
"sending ATQ0"
"re-sending ATZ"
"modem not responding"

I just noticed: kuki does recognize the modem as modem if I boot with the modem plugged in (using the left USB, if this is of any importance).

All of the above is the same what I get with 2-6-28-13 generic.

Sorry, no better news from here, but the problem might not be the kernel? Can the problem be with my settings?

btw: why does 3G script tell me it needs internet connection on install?

what i CAN tell you, if 3G doesn't work with the generic kernel, we cannot fix it that easily.
But it's possible you need to boot with the modem allready inserted. That one is really worth a try. My right sd only works when a card is present at boot.

Any other experiences? people with working 3G? people with no change?

No luck getting online using Qualcomm 9212 built-in 3G modem under 2.6.30 kernel.

@schizo: and you are using the newest .30? We had two ...

is it a usb-3G-modem thingy? or is it part of the internal hardware. If you need to plug it in, you can see if it's recognised by issuing 'dmesg' in terminal, then inserting the usb modem and again issuing 'dmesg', it should show a difference in the last few lines.

and does it work with the generic kernel?

It has never worked for me in any linux distro.
Works fine in WinXP.

Device shows as Qualcomm 9211 when I run lsusb.
Sometimes lsusb shows Qualcomm 9212, but still no 36 connection.

It appears that a qualcomm 9211 needs the config_usb_serial_qualcomm to be set in the kernel. This was new with the 2.6.30 and later kernels. It is included in the brand new kuki kernel (2.6.31-rc3-kuki-20090722). Hopefully, this will take care of it.

I have successfully installed the new kernel/headers on a fresh installation of kuki.
The 3G script still hasn't got me online, but I've been in an area with poor signal.

I'll try again as soon as I get the proper settings for /etc/kuki/3g/vodafone3g.conf
as I'm on at&t, but there was no at&t option in the setup script.

I have recieved e-mail communications informing me that someone has successfully connected with a Qualcomm 9212 HS-USB 3g modem.

I'm hoping to have this issue solved!

Thanks to all who have worked so hard on this new kernel!

So far, no connection via the Qualcomm 9212 3G modem.

It says carrier detected, but doesn't connect.

How do I direct the terminal output from the 3G script into a text file?

My Japanese emobile D21HW (similar in shape to a Huawei e180 but with no MicroSD slot) works like a charm with kernel Kernel 2.6.31-rc3-kuki-20090722.

I installed the 3G script available at . Then changed some lines at /etc/wvdial.conf to:

Phone = *99***1# username = em password = em

can you reread https://kuki.me/forum/topic.php?id=8#post-122 and tell us exactly what goes wrong? Dont install the .sh script, open it with mousepad and type the commands yourself, that way you'll see when something doesn't work.

I am not a 3G user, so it's rather difficult for me to debug this :p

I've read through https://kuki.me/forum/topic.php?id=8#post-122 but have some misunderstanding concerning "...don't install the .sh script..." as I have already installed the 3G script.
Concerning opening the .sh script in mousepad, I'm unfamiliar with bash scripting & xterm, could I simply include a command in a calling script to direct the scripts terminal output into a text file?
example:
vodafone3g.sh > 3g_output.txt

The 3G script uses xterm & it closes the xterm window on completion. (no time for me to select & copy the xterm window text)

The good news is that the modem is recognized! The carrier detected!
But FireFox fails to connect to any url...
What terminal commands can I issue to verify 3G connection?

the command to output to a file should simply work. If you can't find the file try searching it with catfish. As for the sh script, ..., are you talking about kghunt's script or our script?

and again, concerning 3G I'm hesitant to answer because I don't use it myself and that makes it difficult to debug.

Hm. I would love to see this work, because there's that empty little compartment at the bottom of my original AAO110 that just begs for a 3G card...
