Hi guys. Im reading these posts regarding the external vga output. I bought a led projecter and the supported input is 800x600 or 1024x768 with a output resolution of 640x480. I am somewhat of a newb but do know how to get to the terminal #. How do i step by step get output to the projector? and is this something that i can toggle on the fn-f5 keys to go back and forth as preloaded in the system?

I would try booting from the livecd image and running gparted to delete any partitions on the sd card and on the usb you are using as a boot partition. Then have gparted format them to something like ext2.

Then, during install, select the sd card as root (/) and the usb as /boot. You cannot install grub to the same usb stick that you are installing from. You may also want to install the whole thing to the 4gb usb and set the sd card as /home.

Hi folks

Recently my gfriend's AAO SSD died. As a result I am trying to install kuki to an SD card while installing the grub bootloader to a USB (having already loaded the OS to USB via unetbootin).

Kuki installer appears to load the OS to the SD card but once it reaches 94% the GRUB installer fails (code = 1). I have been choosing the USB device for the bootloader install at the advanced menu in the last step. (I've noticed some others have had the same trouble but no fixes seem to have appeared)

I can't figure out what I am doing wrong; although I have a fairly limited knowledge of Linux.

There is something else that is strange, however. Although the SSD appears totally dead the file manager (when kuki is booted from USB) indicates 9.6 Gb of space available despite there being only a 2gb SD card and 4gb usb inserted. Does the remaining space represent parts of the SSD that are not dead (I can see some folders in there that were modified prior to the disk dying)?

Any advice would be much appreciated :)

P.S. I've tried locating the "mystery disk space" through gparted but it isn't recognised, in fact gparted only detects the USB- not even the SD card.

I did like JK & tcrock: commented out all relevant entries in the 3 files (/etc/rc.local, ~/.Xmodmap and ~/.xinitrc), and I can confirm that everything works now. Thanks guys!

zorofroozo on "[HOWTO] Use an external screen"

This is my method, if you have an other method we'll be happy to hear it;)
(it is based on my 1680x1050 setup, by changing that to your desired resolution, all should work)
All words looking like
this
are to be put into a terminal. Some ways of opening the terminal are: Alt+f2 and type "xfce4-terminal". Or go to Menu --> terminal.

Because the AAO won't work with your screen at boot (you'lle get a crappy 800x600), we are going to add a new resolution to it's supported resolutions list. First we need to know all the parameters.

cvt 1680 1050 60

this command asks for the parameters of a 1680x1050 screen with a refresh rate of 60hz.

you will get something like this:
zorofroozo@zorofroozo-netbook:~$ cvt 1680 1050 60
# 1680x1050 59.95 Hz (CVT 1.76MA) hsync: 65.29 kHz; pclk: 146.25 MHz
Modeline "1680x1050_60.00" 146.25 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089 -hsync +vsync

We need everything after "Modeline", so that is: "1680x1050_60.00" 146.25 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089 -hsync +vsync

now we know our parameters, we are going to insert them into xrandr, the X Resize, Rotate and Reflect Extension. But we are going to make it easier for you, we are going to make a litlle script so you don't need to go into terminal all the time.

start mousepad by using alt+f2 or by going to mousepad --> Accessories --> Mousepad. And insert the following lines:
## Adds a newmode
xrandr --newmode "1680x1050_60.00" 146.25 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089 -hsync +vsync && xrandr --addmode VGA "1680x1050_60.00"

be sure to change everything behind --newmode if you are using an other resolution. Then save your file in the directory you prefer (I chose my Home directory called zorofroozo) and call it widescreen.sh . Just run your script and go to Menu --> Settings --> Display. And choose your desired resolution.

end of the tutorial (unless ya want tha script to start at boot)

-
-
-

ATTENTION, if you like you can run this script at boot (instructions below), but if you run any graphics intensive program (like urbanterror or an other game), X will start to freeze every few minutes. You can defreeze x by pressing "ctrl+alt+F6" and then "ctrl+alt+F7"

now we are going to make the script executable

chmod a+x /home/zorofroozo/widescreen.sh

be sure to change the directory into your corresponding directory.

lastly we are going to make kuki start the script at boot. Go to Menu --> Settings --> Session and Startup. Go to the Application Autostart tab. And click add. The command should be our file, widescreen.sh . Yur free to choose the rest.

Reboot :)

and then simply go to Menu --> Settings --> Display. And choose your desired resolution.

To get the Suspend button working you need to set it to do something in the Power Manager Settings: Shortcuts>Sleep Button.

I'm not sure why clicking System Default in keyboard settings got rid of all your shortcuts - it certainly didn't for me! Are you sure you clicked the correct tick box (on the third tab not the second).

can confirm that works, although I just commented out all the lines in Xmodmap rather than removing the file..

Only thing is my suspend button (Fn-F4) isn't working (maybe after I tried setting the shortcuts back to defaults and lost them) can anyone tell me how to add this shortcut back (i.e. whats the command to set the shortcut too?)

ah yeah, you're right.

Just spotted the following in my rc.local though

#linpus script for card readers
#/usr/local/sbin/jmb38x_d3e.sh &

which makes me wonder, did the AAO shipped with linpus read xd cards? I'd have thought they should if they had a 5 in 1 reader as part of the hardware.. surely the part of linpus that does it can be made to work in kuki somehow

I may try commenting out the line to see what happens when I have more time

Hi all,

I've been trying to find out how to get my Huawei e1550 to work on the 3 network here in UK.

I've seen all sorts of stuff relating to usb-modeswitch and having to use windows usb sniffers (don't have Windows).

I'm at a loss actually where to start.

I also have available a ZTE MF626 which I could use (it is on T-Mobile network - but I prefer the charging structure of 3)

My AAO is a 110 and os 2.6.31-rc9-kuki-20090919

Thanks in advance

I had similar issue - I was using linux version of unetbootin. I seem to have space on the disk in use with hidden files (although no error message was thrown up). I did an erase (on my Mac as I don't yet know how to do that on linux) of the usb drive. It all then worked.

I had the same problem.

my workaround for this.

remove these lines in in /etc/rc.local:

/usr/bin/setkeycodes e025 130
/usr/bin/setkeycodes e026 131
/usr/bin/setkeycodes e027 132
/usr/bin/setkeycodes e029 122
/usr/bin/setkeycodes e071 134
/usr/bin/setkeycodes e072 135

and remove ~/.Xmodmap and ~/.xinitrc

and just use the audio shortcuts in Settings>Keyboard>Layout

Works fine after a reboot..

If you look at guides for installing kuki and also ubuntu (great way to get help is to look at ubuntu forum as well- just the windows manger is different from the default gnome and there is a flavor xubuntu that has xfce - kuki's windows manager) you will see that if you have a spare partition (or the installer can create one) kuki will install to that. It also install a program called grub that gives you a menu to allow you to boot to either XP or kuki. This is "daul booting".

I would guess that mplayer will play your wm files of most flavours. You can check as mplayer is available for windows.

The zune could be more problematic but generally support for these type of device is not as good as windows - you may for example see it only as a usb drive. Sorry i don't have specific knowledge of this.
